Andy Ellis - candidate for Governor of Maryland in 2026 - calls on Governor Wes Moore to sign SB 587 and establish the Maryland Reparations Commission.

"Signing SB 587 into law is important because the Maryland Reparations Commission would move past symbolism and lay out a path toward repairing the ongoing damage of enslavement and other racial injustices in Maryland," said Ellis. "Governor Moore has made closing the racial wealth gap a policy focus of his administration and if we want to do that we must understand the policies that caused the racial wealth gap and what specific repairs are needed to close it."

Ellis is seeking the nomination of the Green Party, which has called for reparations in the form of monetary compensation for descendents of enslaved Africans since its first national platform was released in 2000. The Democratic Party platform calls only to study the possibility of reparations, a technique that has been used for decades to delay and deny justice by bogging down action in procedure, “but SB 587 is not a vague or never-ending study — it has specific requirements for research and policy recommendations, and concrete timelines for action,” Ellis said.

“I was disappointed to see SB 587 not included in Governor Moore’s bill signing ceremony today, and I call on him to sign the bill at one of his bill signing ceremonies in the month of May,“ Ellis said. “We need to move beyond the question of if reparations are due and have a policy debate about how to implement reparations in Maryland. This commission offers us an excellent opportunity to have that debate as part of the 2026 campaign for Governor of Maryland.”

Ellis looks forward to engaging Governor Moore directly in televised debates. Ellis' campaign is promoting a petition urging Maryland Public Television to reverse its exclusionary standards, which have never included a Green Party candidate in a Gubernatorial debate. Ellis believes that Marylanders deserve to hear from every candidate who will appear on the ballot for the 2026 Gubernatorial election.
