How did it happen that such a large proportion of white people believe that the President-elect is a “blue color billionaire” who understands “working class” people? How is it that so many Americans believe that “immigrants are taking our jobs?” How is it that affirmative action and DEI initiatives — of which white women have been the primary beneficiaries — have successfully been reframed as an undermining of American “meritocracy?” How is it that Black voters have become the backbone of one major party? How are aspirations to whiteness peddled to immigrants who oftentimes translate that into their votes?
